Goose Spit
June 3, 2001
We visited this area off Comox BC
kayaked up the Tsolum River
A beautiful sandy spit, unique in many ways,
water on both sides and a narrow
road down the center.
Each side offering it's own gorgeous view
Lined with bright yellow broom.
Warm water
Yes, about 84' F
( Ha! guess again )
A PICTORIAL ESSAY OF THE DAY
After leaving Parksville we paused at Union Bay,
My Van, was one of the more prestegious automobiles in the area.
"A pregnant PT Cruiser"...
The van was well accepted by the local tree huggers
after they examined the decoration on the sides,
and discovered it was
plastic & not real wood.
Sadie, our Kayak Hound
patiently sits perched on top of this pilling
We were teaching her the "Polly Wants a Cracker" routine,
she participated, in a very gracious way
Except she wanted a cookie for her efforts.
We were not alone,
Other groups were out walking along the shore
and enjoying the day.
A 30 pound boy, a 187 pound Irish Setter and DAD.
A nice family outing.
In the middle of the river
this Turbo-Prop plane pulled a U-turn, right beside us,
the pilot waved as he turned around...
heading for the main land.
Then he floored it, WOW !
what a rush,
a roar from the engine
& a whole pile of wind & water !
Up the river we discovered an hidden opening,
leading into this
quiet lagoon, as we rest & see many fish below
looking for a nice place to have lunch.
The water here was consistent in depth
crystal clear, we could see the bottom details easily
the white spots on the surface, like snow
are white cotton seed puffs from the canopy
of cotton trees above.
This mystical canal led us through an ancient secret passage
in a once forbidden forest
to these abandoned fish boats resting in the stillness
yellow seems a popular color here....
Plenty of cotton here, it was floating in the air
like sunshine and snow as we head back to the main waterway.
Cheryle pauses, while Sadie studies the chart.
"Up ahead turn to Port."
Tide is flooding, as we venture east to the spit.
The sun setting in our wake.
We stop again to reflect....
Even the Girls, reappeared to say farewell....
Paddling home, the sun setting,
and the water is still crystal clear
we could see the crabs walking across the ocean floor.
We hope you enjoyed our day.
Cheers Sadie
