Quadra Island BC
June 2004
Paddle Along With Us.
Departing from the BC Ferry dock at Campbell River
( the big island )
Heading to Quathiaski Cove
on Quadra Island
12 minute crossing
$ 20.00 return,
Such a deal !
17 minutes later
The Kayak launch ramp off Rebecca Spit Park
looking east to Drew Harbour
as you can plainly see
we are not into long portages & carring Kayaks,
so hows this for a short launch ?
Why Struggle ?
On Our Way
Cheryle leads...
:)
the expedition
this is Cheryles "short cut"
through the kelp beds,
leading to the Breton Islands.
Lunch on the east shore of Breton Island
plenty of parking space on this beach.
That's Course Sand, not rocks
After lunch we did some exploring
through the old growth forrest.
The Haunted Ghost Wharf at Bolder Landing
off Surge Narrows.
The local natives say;
- They Never go here after dark !
There is no Bar here ! - - Ha!
These 2 Gulls,
insisted in joining us for lunch,
Everyone participated
~ We ate our lunch, they watched.
keeping perfect harmony
Back at our camp at The Tsa-Kwa-Luten Lodge
pronounced ( Saw - Kwa - Looten )
( a little dab of Scotch makes it easier )
We were royally entrained as well as fed & by this native lad
who smoked fresh salmon over this open fire pit
combined with fresh Quadra Island Vegitables
and a west coast Indian portion of Double Chocolate Mud Pie !
5 Caesars, 9 Scotties,
2 bottles of red wine,1 litre of white wine
and a couple of Napolian Brandies.
What a delicious treat after paddling the rugged coast.
Oh, the Salmon was ok too.
An overhead visitor, watches our every move.
Setting up our camping spot.
Wandering around great room of the lodge, relaxing.
as the sun sets over the darkened forrest to the west.
Some people prefer a slightly larger Kayak
Nice Colors ~
the majestic Heriot Bay
The following day,
we are off for the Village Lake Chain
4 beautiful tranquil lakes chained together,
by prestine rivers,
some of the passages were smaller than we expected.
Resting in the quiet cove between Village Bay Lake & Main lake
greeted by the haunted, errie sounds of the Loons.
We stopped to swim at this white sandy beach
after perswading this little brown bear to head for the hills
He grunted and sauntered off, up the trail.
Here is another of Cheryles short cuts,
through this narrow waterway
connecting us to Little Main Lake
narrow but deep, 12 feet average, very clear water
we could see the bottom and the fish swimming along
A bears - eye view.
Try turning around an 18 foot Kayak,
in a channel thats about 3 to 10 feet wide
using your paddle thats 7 feet long !
It was fun,,, we laughed a lot.
we finally uncoupled our paddles
and used only 1 half...
Stopping for a rest & water,
thinking about smoking some of this grass !
P a r d o n....
A Rare Find,
this Ancient Ceremonial Indian Duck Mask
( as seen on TV )
Sought after by many anthropologists,
for it's unique and mystical properties.
as legend tells, the finder of these masks
can actually see the world through the eyes of the Loon.
and as amazing as this may seem,
it's true !
easily demonstrated here by Doc Future.
~ Quack - Quack ~
Truly Amazing *
Science in harmony with nature.
Heading back to the van, she's thirsty...
Cheryle creates quite a wake after 4:30 PM
Back on the ferry, headed for Campbell River
for a perfect 12 minute trip.
We hope you enjoy this glimpse into the magic of Quadra
it's a great little island to explore
the people are wonderful.
