VARGAS ISLAND

Cheryle & I visited this island, July 2000

This small island is off the west coast,
north west of Tofino, Long Beach area.
no roads, no cars, stepping back in time...
To share the photos of this adventure.

The Vargas Island Inn
Was built in 1908,
it's beautiful & sleeps about 40 people comfortably
Yes, running hot & cold water, flush toilets & fridge
( ICE )
for the Happy Hour

Cheryle, walking Ahous Bay,
Wolf Country
right on the west coast, facing Japan
We Paddled about 3 hours, to reach this Bay,
it's even more beautiful than it looks here.

The Spirit Mist
Was a wonderful friend.... Having a rest on the beach.

The Fog,
as it rolls in & out, the Islands disappear & return again & again.

This might not look like an exciting photo,
BUT
there is more to this than looks
Cheryle ( under direct orders )
actually packed all her clothes into this one small red bag.
( a miracle )

as we are preparing to launch in Tofino.
I had to leave plenty of room in the boats for the Scotch,
Oh,,, I mean safety supplies & scientific equipment"

No Lunch would be complete, without "Hawkins Cheezies"
as we enjoy this make shift picnic table on the beach.

We put this red life jacket on the pole,
to scare off the wolves
an old Indian trick...
Don't laugh it worked,
you can't see any wolves can you

Cheryle, after Kayaking around Vargas Island
demonstrates the nutrition & energy from the Hawkins Cheezies

A WOLF !

This is Felise, she's head of the security on Vargas Island
very sweet, and likes Hawkins Cheezies too

This path, close to the beach leads to the sauna & the main Inn.

View of the main dining room in the lodge.

Nice little beach, and Cove, as viewed from the hill top
Crowded, lets see where can we sit for lunch ?
Only the waves here.

Looking East,
as we travel by compass only,
surrounded by fog all around
kept heading 270 degrees West,
compensated for a flooding tide
and a 4 knott current.
we came out of the fog bank, and we were sitting right
in front of the Inn.

I am related to Christopher Columbus !
and Cheryle to Captain Cook !
So this was a piece of cake...

This was the largest of all the Indian Burial Caves we discovered.
Cheryle backed her Kayak way inside this one
She could hear a faint beating of a drum.
I didn't ask a lot of questions....

Ahous Point, White Sand & Black Rocks
we estimated this rock to be over 265 million years old !
So we celebrated it's birthday,
better late than never.

We Hope this shares the adventure with you.
sorry this page is so slow to load, it's all the photos...

Cheers Cheryle & Gary
