Wigeon Wildlife Estuary

June 11, 2001

We toured this area west of
Pitt Lake, in Pitt Meadows BC

A beautiful low lying area very unique,
water reflections every where you looked
& very little dry land to walk on.
Beautiful marsh grasses & reeds lining the shores.
As we started out from the launching area on Pitt Lake
we were greeted by rain & a cool breeze.

There were many canoes here,
most(all)were heading back for cover and home.

As we heading out for the estuary...
crossing the lake went ok, the current & wind pushing
us to the south, as we paddled westward, drifting sharply.

A PICTORIAL ESSAY OF OUR DAY

As we entered the quiet waters of the slough,
the rain gradually subsided.
...
(     Notice I didn't say it stopped     )

....I had canoed this area about 20 years ago,
with my 2 sons Josh & Brad....
so I felt I knew this area like the back of my hand.

Fascinating how nature can change the hands
of time in 20 years
.....it was the same,   but different.....

The old indian trick, right hand up, palm open
has been noted for reducing rain........ it worked !
The rain did stop, and the sky brightened
(   we still did not need the sun screen  )

Above, the clouds rolled in & out,
the air was clear & fresh around us....
and the river gradually got narrower and shallow.
Many small waterways entering the shore as we paddled along,
begging us to take a peek......Cheryle fighting the urge.

Behind me here under the trees,
not quite as I remembered it,
was the ruins of a home & dock,
all taken back by nature,
all under the water and brush, sleeping.
The address was still on the pole...."217"
marking the "spot". ...

The still water & clouds made interesting photos
we traveled slow and enjoyed the song birds
as they greeted our visit.

We ventured up this waterway ( to Cheryle's right )
it opened up to a silent grass land,
waving quietly in the breeze like a field of rice.

Numerous dead head logs sleep in the river,
with their top hats of ferns
from the logging of the past or yesterdays storm.
Each one telling a different story.

This was as far as we could go,
nice sandy beach & camping area.

We stopped and had lunch here.
Cheryle and Sadie finishing off the cookies
we had packed for dessert.
This is the end of the navigable part of the river,
and the beginning of the trail to the Wigeon Falls
(a scant 12 mile jaunt....so they say)
One that we didn't take,
deciding to leave this part of the adventure
for our next visit here.

This inviting canal led us through an ancient nut grove.
We thought we had discovered a short cut for home,
perhaps the north west passage to the Orient
but it got so shallow we had to retreat...
to take the long way back.

thankyou and
we hope you enjoyed this shared day.

Cheers Sadie
